Fire destroys room at Ambassador Jonel Powell’s condo

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – QUICK response by the St. Kitts-Nevis Fire and Rescue Services had prevented a fire at the home of Ambassador Jonel Powell from spreading to catastrophic proportion.

The incident, SKNVibes understands, occurred last evening (Nov. 2) sometime after 7:00 p.m., where the Fire Department responded to a report of a fire at Horizon Villas in Frigate Bay.

Fire Chief Everette O’Garro told SKNVibes that when the team got to the scene at Ambassador Powell’s condominium, it had to forcibly gain access to the property.

Once inside, the team observed that the fire was confined to a bedroom on the upper floor of the dwelling place.

O’Garro said his officers were able to extinguish the fire and prevent any spread of it, but the contents of the room were totally destroyed.

He said Ambassador Powell was not home at the time of the incident, and thankfully no one was injured.

In an interview with SKNVibes, Ambassador Powell said he received a voice note which suggested that someone had broken into his home and set the fire.

“They have not been able to determine what the cause of it was. Somebody sent me a voice note saying that my home was broken into and set the bed on fire. I can’t verity that. I can verify that there was a fire at my home though.”

The Fire Chief noted that the cause of the fire is unknown and investigations are being made.
