    CHARLESTOWN
NEVIS (October 21, 2005) -- The Department of Agriculture on Nevis has hailed its first ever Intercultural Food Fair a success. Mr Eric Evelyn the Department's Communications Officer made the comment on Friday October 21, 2005, following the event which was held on Market Street in central Charlestown.

Inclement weather did not hamper hundreds of curious Nevisians including Premier Hon Vance Amory, Hon Livingston Herbert Minister of Agriculture, Hon Jean Harris Minister of Health and Hon Malcolm Guishard Deputy Premier from patronising the event which officials were forced to change its venue from The Villa on Main Street and Mr Evelyn said they are thankful for the support.

Even though there has been quite a bit of rainfall I must say the response from the general public and the support has really been very good and we want to thank them so much for that support, Mr Evelyn said.

The fair was held as part of activities to mark World Food Day which was observed on October 16, 2005 and Mr. Evelyn said his Department saw it fitting to organise the event in keeping with the theme Agriculture and Intercultural Dialogue used for World Food Day.

The reason we organised the Intercultural Food Fair was primarily because of the theme chosen to celebrate World Food Day 2005.  The theme was Agriculture and Intercultural Dialogue and bearing in mind the number of cultures and nationalities we have here in Nevis, we decided to do something to bring them together and to show off the culinary skills of all these individuals and the various foods from other Caribbean countries.

World Food Day is really about food and providing more food and so we thought it would be a good idea to bring all these cultures together and have them display the foods of their respective islands and for the persons here in Nevis to be able to try some of the other foods that are prepared in the other countries, he said.

National and other dishes and drinks from Montserrat, Trinidad and Tobago, Dominica, Guyana, Jamaica and St. Kitts/Nevis were represented and Mr. Evelyn described the participants as being very enthusiastic about the event adding that he was certain that the persons who came to sample the displays were pleased with what was offered.

Responding to whether the event would become an annual event on the Department of Agriculture's calendar of events Mr Evelyn said that the matter would be considered following a post mortem after Friday's event.
