Vigilant staff spots fake skills certificates; two persons arrested and charged

By: RSCNPF, Press Release

Basseterre, St. Kitts, November 08, 2016 (RSCNPF): The Royal St. Christopher and Nevis Police Force has investigated three (3) cases of uttering a forged document, to wit CARICOM Skills Certificates in the past few weeks.

The investigations have resulted so far in charges for two (2) Jamaican nationals.

The cases were brought to the attention of the Criminal Investigations Department by a vigilant staff at the Ministry of International Trade who verified the validity of the documents in the country of issuance after suspicions were raised during processing interviews.

Inspector James Francis of the Criminal Investigations Department commended the staff of the Ministry of International Trade and said "their attention to detail as gate keepers in ensuring the integrity of this regional program has to be commended. It also sends a clear message that in St. Kitts and Nevis, we not only trust what we look at, we verify."

The actions of the staff at the Ministry have prevented three (3) persons who in essence were not best qualified from obtaining employment through fraud.

The Ministry of International Trade has since thanked Inspector Francis and his team at the Criminal Investigations Department for their thoroughness and assistance with this matter.

The Criminal Investigations Department encourages employers to ensure that skills certificates have been verified by the Ministry of International Trade for their employees. Additionally, the Department encourages all employers to ensure all foreign workers have appropriate work permit documentation.
