Two bicycles to be given away during Youth Bike Run

By: SKNIS, Press Release

Basseterre, St. Kitts, November 09, 2016 (SKNIS): Two new bicycles will be given away to registered participants at Sunday’s (November 13) Island–wide Youth Bike Run, which begins at 6 a.m. at the Conaree Playing Field.

Acting Director in the Department of Youth Empowerment, Pierre Liburd, said the inaugural event forms part of activities for Youth Month 2016, and is designed to engage young people and older persons in a friendly gathering.

“It’s a healthy exercise; you get to see the scenery and breathe in the rural and urban air of St. Kitts and Nevis, Mr. Liburd said, noting that it will be fun as they ride along with their peers and people who support them.”

Anyone can participate in the bike ride as it is an open activity. However, in order to be eligible to win the bikes, Mr. Liburd said they will have to register with the department on Church Street. Registration costs $35 and riders will also be presented with a t-shirt and a bottle of water.

Individuals who do not own a bicycle but who wish to ride in the event can access one of 30 bikes that will be rented by the Department of Youth Empowerment for persons to use. Mr. Liburd thanked Warner’s Consulting for partnering with the government department by offering the 30 bikes. The department will pay the rental cost but the riders will be responsible for the care and safety of the bikes during the event. Emergency assistance will be available for the riders along the route, which goes around the country eastwards via Cayon.

“If you are interested, show up at the Conaree Playing Field on Sunday from 6 a.m. and ride along with us,” the acting director said. “If you don’t make it in time, we should be on the road for some time so you can drive really fast and catch us up, or you can join in along the route from your different communities once you have a bicycle.”

The bike ride will conclude at Port Zante. It will be followed by a stunt activity organized by the Department of Sports. Additional information is available by telephone 467-1393.
