Regional Police Officers to Receive Training in Death Notification under the IMPACT Justice Project

    (BRIDGETOWN, November 14, 2016) -- The Canadian Government-funded Improved Access to Justice in the Caribbean (IMPACT Justice) Project is hosting a training course on death notification for police officers of varying ranks from Barbados, Dominica, Grenada, Guyana, Montserrat and St. Vincent and the Grenadines.

     

    The two-day training course, which is being held at the Accra Beach Hotel, Christ Church, commences with an Opening Session on November 17th under the chairmanship of Prof. Velma Newton, Regional Project Director of IMPACT Justice. Her Excellency Marie Legault, High Commissioner of Canada to Barbados and the Eastern Caribbean, will deliver remarks on behalf of the Government of Canada and Attorney General and Minister of Home Affairs, Hon. Adriel Brathwaite, Q.C., M.P., will deliver remarks on behalf of the Government of Barbados. Participants will also be addressed by Staff Sergeant Jason Walker of the Calgary Police Service and Assistant Commissioner Lila Strickland will deliver a Welcome on behalf of the Royal Barbados Police Force.

    The training will address the delivery of death notification to families of victims by police officers and will include topics such as attending the scene, fundamentals of death notification, survivors’ reactions, stages of grieving and the handling of the victim’s property. It is being facilitated by Police Sergeants Jason Walker and Andrew Woodward, both of the Calgary Police Service.
