BVI, 17 November 2016 - The Ministry of Health and Social Development continues to urge the community to remain vigilant and support efforts to reduce the impact of Zika by eliminating potential breeding sites for mosquitoes.
The message comes after the recent period of heavy rains experienced in the Territory. Acting Chief Environmental Health Officer, Mrs. Yolanda Penn said that the Vector Control Team will continue their routine surveillance to assess mosquito breeding and remedy problem areas and that fogging activities continue and is ongoing.
Mrs. Penn explained, “Regular fogging announcements are sent out. However, we encourage anyone with questions about where fogging is taking place to contact the Environmental Health Division directly. In addition, the Environmental Health Division is working in conjunction with the Department of Waste Management to identify and remove derelict vehicles.”
Householders and property owners are advised to survey their premises and empty containers that may be holding water. Mrs. Penn said that garbage should be disposed on a regular basis, and drains should be checked and cleared where water could settle. She is also encouraging persons to properly scrub the sides of containers to destroy mosquito eggs, keep their yards clean and clear of weeds, and cover empty containers that are not being used.
Eliminating mosquito breeding sites, avoiding bites and improving environmental conditions in and around dwellings are some of the key messages from the Ministry of Health and Social Development to reduce the risk of ZIKA transmission.
The Ministry of Health and Social Development is committed to ensuring that all aspects of the environment with the potential to negatively impact the health of the population are managed efficiently to enable all persons in the BVI to attain and maintain optimal health and well-being.
