BVI, 18 November 2016 - The Government of the Virgin Islands has officially launched the study of Caribbean Advanced Proficiency Examination (CAPE) Financial Services Studies.

The CAPE Financial Services Studies will contribute to the development of more competent international financial services experts in an area which is poised for high profitable growth across the region.

Deputy Premier and Minister for Natural Resources and Labour, Dr. the Honourable Kedrick D. Pickering, acting in the capacity of Premier at the launch held on November 3, said that the study of CAPE Financial Services Studies is very important.

He added that one of the best ways to ensure sustainability of the sector is to create educational opportunities for the youth. These educational opportunities allow them to learn, appreciate and understand the importance of the financial service industry to our economy, the region and to the rest of the world.

The programme will contribute to students becoming more aware of the international importance of the financial services industry and the impact of international financial policies on their Caribbean home.

CXC Registrar, Mr. Glenroy Cumberbatch said, “Subjects such as Financial Services and other New Generation CAPE subjects empower persons leaving the education system to contribute immediately to the economies of the region either with a skill or with knowledge that is applicable to income-generating sectors.”

The Financial Services Studies syllabus is organised in two units. Each unit independently offers students a comprehensive programme of study with appropriate balance between depth and coverage to provide a basis for further study in the field.

Among other objectives, the CAPE Financial Services syllabus aims to promote an awareness of the international importance of the financial services industry; create awareness of the impact of offshore financial service policies on the Caribbean; help students understand the impact of globalisation and the global financial industry on the Caribbean.

It also aims to help students understand the value of the customers and information systems in the financial services industry; and develop the capacity for critical thinking, creativity, problem-solving, leadership and management.
