Opposition Leader Douglas “devastated” by death of Ambassador Alvarez

    BASSETERRE, ST. KITTS – Former St. Kitts and Nevis Prime Minister the Rt. Hon. Dr. Denzil L. Douglas said Saturday he was “devastated to receive this sad news of the passing of my good friend and Comrade His Excellency Ambassador Bernardo Alvarez.”

     

    “He was not only a friend of St Kitts and Nevis but also a committed friend and comrade of the wider  Caribbean region,” Dr. Douglas, Leader of the Parliamentary Opposition in St. Kitts and Nevis.

    Bernardo Alvarez, a longtime ambassador to the United States who led Hugo Chavez’s diplomats in defending Venezuela’s socialist revolution died Thursday in Caracas. He was 60.
    In his statement on Saturday, Dr. Douglas said: “There's no doubt that he will be greatly missed by the entire PetroCaribe and ALBA Fraternity for his untiring efforts to improve the living standards of the people of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela and create greater lasting friendships of the peoples of the Americas.”

    Dr. Douglas requested the St. Kitts-based PetroCaribe office “to convey to President Nicholas Maduro, his government and the family of our dear Ambassador, my profound condolences on behalf of the St Kitts-Nevis Labour Party and the Parliamentary Opposition of the Federation of St Kitts & Nevis.”

    “May his life, works and achievements further invigorate and propel the Revolution of President Hugo Chavez that continues under President Maduro and to which our dearly departed Comrade had dedicated his entire life,” said Dr. Douglas, who served as Prime Minister of St. Kitts and Nevis from July 1995 to February 15th 2015.
