Flash flood advisory issued as intense trough moves across islands

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts - While no watches or warnings have been implemented, the St. Kitts Meteorological Office has issued a flood advisory as a result of the consistent rainfall which has been taking place since the early-morning hours of today (Nov. 28).

The rainfall is associated with “an intense trough” which is making its way across the islands and as was indicated in a weather report, “it is likely to bring showers and thunderstorms across the Leeward and Virgin Islands today and tonight. Some of the showers could be heavy at times and could cause flash flooding especially in low-lying and flood-prone areas.”

The St. Kitts Met Office informed that the Antigua and Barbuda Meteorological Services issued a flash flood advisory for “minor flooding in low-lying and flood-prone areas” of the Federation of St. Kitts and Nevis which is valid until 8:00p.m. today.

Information emanating from the Met Office indicates that between 8:00p.m. yesterday and 2:00p.m. today, 29.mm or 1.17 inches of rainfall has been recorded. The Met Office advises that that represents a significant amount given the current circumstances.

“A flood advisory means that streams, creeks, ghauts and drains may be elevated or even overflowing into streets, low lying and flood prone areas; however, property damage will be minimal…

“Inconveniences can be expected but the flooding is not expected to be immediately life threatening. However, just one foot of flooding water is enough to sweep vehicles off the road.

The situation will continue to be monitored and if necessary a flash flood watch or warning would be implemented, the St. Kitts Met Office advises.

The public is also asked to monitor the weather and exercise caution when approaching or crossing watercourses.
