Royal St. Kitts opens doors to Fire and Rescue Youth Programme

By: VonDez Phipps, SKNVibes

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – AS membership of the St. Kitts Fire and Rescue Youth Outreach Programme expands with more eager children, the Royal St. Kitts Hotel has welcomed the community group to its facility to assist the programme in any way possible.

At the break of dawn on Saturday (May 30), over 70 students accompanied by Fire and Rescue personnel trekked the Frigate Bay hills on a nature walk from the Newtown fire outpost. The early-morning hike ended at the Royal St. Kitts Hotel where the children were warmly welcomed to play games and enjoy refreshments, compliments of the hotel.

According the project coordinator, Vira Matthew, one of the fundamental elements of the programme is to instil ethics in the lives of the children. She added that it is important to explore the island to give children some exposure, especially with the recent tourism developments in Frigate Bay.

“This event is all a part of training our children as we expose them to the Frigate Bay area. We often take these children for granted when, in fact, a lot of them have never experienced much outside of Basseterre or their smaller communities. The nature walk gave them an idea of the new development in the Frigate Bay area and the Royal St. Kitts Hotel was the perfect place to end,” Matthew told SKNVibes.

Matthew thanked the management of the hotel for extending an invitation to the group to generate interest in the young students and to give a refreshing setting do to group activities. The location is “fantastic”, according to Matthew, as is offers not only history but also a calm and beautiful setting.

Matthew said she is very pleased that the hotel can acknowledge what the group is doing and show interest in assisting. She indicated that the programme looks forward to a long-lasting relationship with the Royal St. Kitts Hotel to benefit the children.

The youth group, established November last year, is designed to provide a healthy social environment for students between the ages of five and 17. It focuses on life skills, mentoring, anger management and devotions.
