BVI Press Release

B.V.I. Monday, June 2 – Students at the Enid Scatliffe Pre-primary School on Friday left their regular school uniforms at home in exchange for career wear as a part of the school’s annual celebration of career day.

According to school officials, the students were encouraged, along with their parents, to choose a future career and a matching uniform.

Students chose career paths in medicine and several students dressed as medical doctors, nurses and veterinarians. Others chose careers such as law enforcement officers, judges, singers, basketball players and even business men and women, although the students did not know which type of business.

Stage two student Shile David’s uniform depicted that he wants to be a pilot to one day fly “big airplanes across the world”.

“I think I want to be a pilot when I grow up”, he said. David is one example of how the day brings several family members together as his parents decided on the pilot uniform and his grandmother, a seamstress, made the outfit.

Teachers and parents were excited about the day as it started a dialogue with students and children about their futures although most of the students will not enter the workforce for another 10 to 13 years.

“It was a successful day and we look forward to it every year”, Principal Gladys Scatliffe said.

She also added that she appreciated the effort put forward by the parents to make the day successful.

Career day is held in several schools across the Territory. It is an initiative started by the schools to encourage students to think about their future careers very early in their education.
