BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – AFTER a two-night elimination process, King Socrates has topped the list of calypsonians who have advanced to the semifinal round of the Sugar Mas 45 Calypso Monarch competition.
The eliminations were held on Saturday evening (Dec. 10) and last evening at Carnival Village in Warner Park where more than 40 calypsonians – from both the Proud Sound and Legends Tents - performed one of their competition pieces.
Most of the competitors appeared to have brought their ‘A’ game, delivering stellar performances while others, though not as good, still had great entertainment value.
Of the lot, King Socrates is ahead with a total of 277 points and he is followed by Calypso Craig with 272 points. With 271 points is Daddy Nature after whom is Little Miss Attitude with 260 points.
The Calypsonian from Hell, Lord Kut, is in fifth place with 259 points, followed by Lucious with 258 points and in 7th place is Godfrey with 254 points.
I-Soursop made it into the semifinals in 8th place with 253 points, Lady Diva is 9th with 251 points, Queenie G advanced with 250 points. With 247 points and in 11th place is Queen Kibi.
With 244 points is Hollywood and tied in 13th place are Mighty J and King Irvin with 241 points. Jungle Lion, Singing Jackie have advanced with 238 and 235 points respectively.
Also moving on to the semifinal round of the competition are Lady B and Princess P, and the two alternates are Dwighty and Diamond Ace.
While the performances enthralled the audience, the absence of particular elements - King Ayatollah, King Phonsie and De Unexpected – was noted.
The calyposonians return to the competition stage on Sunday (Dec. 18) when the semifinals would be held.
Seven competitors would advance from that round to the finals where they would come up against reigning Calypso Monarch, King Astro, who has won the crown for two consecutive years.
The finals would take place on Dec 29.
