CHARLESTOWN, Nevis – THE Nevis Mental Health Department is now US$500 richer after receiving a donation from the Northern California Chapter of the Caribbean Tourism Organisation (CTO).
The presentation of the cheque was made on Friday (May 29) at the Golden Rock Hotel, Gingerland by Chapter President Julie Carter. Carter said Nevis is a beautiful, unspoiled island and was chosen for special attention this year out of the 34 territories in the Caribbean.
Accepting the cheque of behalf of the Department was Nicole Slack-Liburd, who thanked the organisation and said that although many organisations list mental health as a priority area, the financial resources needed to execute programmes are not as forthcoming as in other areas of health such as H.I.V/AIDS and chronic non-communicable diseases.
She said the Ministry of Health applauds the Chapter for recognising the need for financial investment into the mental health programmes.
Among those present at the simple ceremony was Advisor on Tourism in the Nevis Island Administration Alistair Yearwood, who described Nevis as an authentic Caribbean experience.
