Popular businessman beaten and robbed

By: Stanford Conway, SKNVibes.com

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – AS some aspects of crime continue unabatedly in the twin-island Federation, another individual was early yesterday morning (Dec. 16) beaten and robbed in his home by two armed bandits.

Reports reaching this publication state that popular restaurateur and owner of Boozie’s on the Frigate Bay Strip, Kevin Walters has been one of the latest victims of robbery.

The latest victim, however, was a man who, this morning (Dec. 17) was robbed of an undisclosed sum of money at the Basseterre Ferry Terminal while waiting to board a St. Maarten-bound vessel to shop for the Christmas/Carnival Season.

Reports state that sometime after 3:00 a.m. when Walters had closed his restaurant and was retiring to his Ocean Gardens home, two men, one armed with a handgun and the other with a knife and a chunk of rock, were already in the dwelling house having entered by breaking a window in his bedroom.

Walters, when confronted by the bandits, was severely beaten and robbed of the day’s sales before the two men made good their escape.

He was transported to the JNF General Hospital, treated for his injuries and later sent away.

A report was made to the police and an investigation was launched into the matter.

While a guest this morning on Freedom FM’s programme, ‘The JL Experience’, Commissioner of Police Ian Queeley was questioned on the robbery.

“It is an active investigation. All I would say is that the police did receive a report of a robbery which is being investigated. The person in question made the report, the police are following up on it, he received some non-life threatening injuries and he was treated and discharged."

In a WINN FM’s report on the incident, the Commissioner made an appeal to the citizenry to be their brothers’ keepers in situation of such nature.

“I want to make an appeal to our people, because if things like this happen in your neighbourhood we must be looking out for our neighbours…we must be our neighbour’s keepers. And so I want that kind of spirit to develop, and we’re going to lead the charge in the coming year assisting communities in setting up neighbourhood watches, all those crime fighting initiatives that we think are necessary to reduce illegal activities.”

He also indicated to the media house that he would personally be visiting Walters “to reassure him. And I want to thank him also for coming forward and relating to the police the incident”.
