By: Cherisse M. Sutton-Jeffers, SKNVibes

Basseterre, St. Kitts – THE Green Valley Festival 2009 ended last night (June 1) with a Parade of Troupes showcasing colours and culture, which followed the early morning J’Ouvert Jam that saw hundreds of people turning out to participate in the annual celebration.

Large groups of people gathered in the streets of Cayon to see the Parade of Troupes as they gyrated in colorful costumes to the sounds of the Road March champs, the Grand Masters Band.

The Parade of Troupes, although scheduled to begin at 3:30 p.m., started sometime around 5:00 p.m. from Cunningham Village in St. Mary's park.

Approximately five troupes, including Energetic and Live in Colour, paraded through the streets of Cayon along with clowns and masquerades as well as a number of Green Valley residents dressed in outfits adding humor to the event.

The Parade concluded at Maynard’s Park, where some of the troupes performed on stage with the Grand Masters Band to bring the curtains down on the annual event.

The Green Valley Festival began on May 16 with the opening of the Calypso Tent and the official ceremony was held on May 27.

On May 28, Calypso Leo was crowned the 2009 Junior Calypso Monarch with ‘I Don’t wanna grow up so’. On the following night, Natasha Benjamin took the Miss Green Valley title and Singing Angie was crowned the Senior Calypso Monarch on May 30 with her renditions of ‘Queen of Green’ and ‘Life is like that’.
