One bailed, one on remand in Ferry Terminal robbery

By: Stanford Conway, SKNVibes.com
BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – THE two suspects involved in the robbery and wounding of a young man in the vicinity of the Basseterre Ferry Terminal were charged and one of them has obtained his pre-trial freedom.

Kevin Williams of Fort Thomas Road and Clinton Matthew of East Street, Newtown were both slapped with charges of robbery and simple wounding.

According to a police communiqué, Matthew was granted bail to the tune of $5,000 with conditions of him adhering to a curfew of 8:00 p.m. to 6: 00 a.m. at his residence and to report to the Basseterre Police Station every Friday between 6:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m.

He also has to appear at the District ‘A’ Magistrate Court on January 9, 2017 to answer to his charges.

The communiqué however did not state if Williams was granted bail; therefore, it is logical to conclude that he was remanded to Her Majesty’s Prison and might have to appear in court on the same day as his alleged accomplice.

Sometime after 3:00 a.m. on Saturday (Dec. 17) while a young man was at the Ferry Terminal waiting to board a St. Maarten bound vessel to shop for the Christmas/Carnival Season, two bandits had robbed him of an undisclosed sum of money.

Police had stated that a bystander, who had witnessed when the man was being robbed, intervened and the bandits fled the scene, but not before wounding the victim with a sharp object and depriving him of his money.

The robbery victim was taken to the JNF General Hospital, where he was treated for his injury and sent away.

However, both men were reportedly identified and sometime during the course of that day police had apprehended Williams and issued a wanted bulletin for Matthew.

On the following day, a police statement had indicated that Matthew was arrested without incident and “the police thank the general public for the information provided in locating the suspect”.
