Four students to be awarded Hamilton Scholarships at the NHCS Annual Tea Party

By: Pauline Ngunjiri, Press Release

December 29th, 2016 -- Four deserving students from the Gingerland and Charlestown Secondary Schools will be awarded scholarships on Wednesday, January 11, 2017 when the Nevis Historical and Conservation Society in collaboration with the Ministry of Social Development holds its annual Tea Party to mark Alexander Hamilton’s 260th birthday.

The moneys accrued through the Tea Party ticket sales goes to the Hamilton Scholarship Fund. Currently fifteen students are benefiting from the scholarship on the island of Nevis. The fund was established in 1966 by the Trott family to assist deserving students at the secondary school level, with uniforms, fees and school supplies.

The fund is administered by the Ministry of Social Development in collaboration with NHCS. Tickets are being sold at the Alexander Hamilton Museum.

The Annual Tea Party is one of the series of activities planned organized by the Alexander Hamilton Awareness Society (AHA) between January 7th to 11th to mark the 260th birthday of the famous Nevisian.

“The Board of Directors of the Alexander Hamilton Awareness(AHA) has voted in favor of making Nevis and Nevisians the primary focus of this year’s celebrations,”  according to His Excellency, Ambassador Everson Hull, the Permanent Representative, Organisation of American States(OAS).

On January 9th, the Hon. Premier Vance Amory will deliver the keynote address before the Mayor and Members of the City Council of Jersey City [established by Hamilton].

On January 11th, the Hon. Premier will lead a delegation of dignitaries in a flag-raising ceremony at Bowling Green Park in the heart of the Wall Street Financial District. The St. Kitts-Nevis flag will be unfurled by representatives of the U.S. Coast Guard which was established by Hamilton when the brave and daring Nevisian was a mere 35-year old. The Main event of the week will be the wreath-laying ceremony at the gravesite of Hamilton, located in the courtyard of the historic Trinity Church. At this event the Premier will also deliver remarks in memory of his fellow Nevisian.

Hamilton rose from humble beginnings in Nevis to become America's First Secretary of the U.S. Treasury. The image of this Nevisian proudly adorns the U.S. $10 bill. Plans are underway for Hamilton's Place of Birth to serve as the flagship historic site in the pursuit of inscription of the "City" of Charlestown as a UNESCO World Heritage site.

The week of activities in New York comes on the heels of the enormously successful Tony award-winning Broadway musical – Hamilton. The several celebrations in Jersey City and Manhattan will provide opportunities for building partnerships with vested U.S. interests who are dedicated to preserving and enhancing the rich legacy of Hamilton.
