Prison officer to be laid to rest Thursday

By: Jermine Abel, SKNVibes.com

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts - THE Prison Officer who died aboard a vessel travelling to Nevis last month is expected to be interred on Thursday (Jan. 12).

Chief Prison Officer Lawson Crosse was at the helm of the Prison Farm on Nevis but that stint was tragically cut short on Wednesday (Dec. 28). It was confirmed by this publication that he died of cardiac arrest.

The man’s colleagues at Her Majesty’s Prison described the 24-year veteran as a jovial, “no-nonsense” person who played by the laws set before him.

“He did his work based on the rule book. In my opinion, he was a gentle giant; there was a soft side to him too,” Superintendent of Prisons Juni Hodge told SKNVibes.

Crosse, said to be in his 40s, was highlighted as someone who always knew how to set aside his professional life from his personal.

“He was able to devote his professional from his private life and was able to fit his role accordingly. When he is on the job, he is on the job. When he is not working he is laying back enjoying life with his friends and family.”

According to information received by SKNVibes, Crosse was on a vessel from St. Kitts heading home to Nevis when he was found unresponsive by boat officials.

Officials onboard the vessel notified health personnel on Nevis and he was subsequently pronounced dead.

When news broke of his death, many were in shock and overcome with grief, with some calling for more medical equipment and ferry operators to be able to provide minor health services onboard their vessels.

Crosse would be accorded a military funeral, Hodge noted, adding that he would be greatly missed by the institution and family members.

SKNVibes understands that the funeral would be held at the St. George's Anglican Church with viewing set to begin at 1:45 p.m. and the ceremony is to begin at 2:00p.m.
