SPPS literacy week exposes fun side of reading

By: Terresa McCall, SKNVibes.com

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – THE expression “learning can be fun” was more than a cliché for the students and staff of the Sandy Point Primary School (SPPS) who recently and successfully concluded their literacy week observance.

The week was held under the theme “Swing into literacy: Lights, Camera, READ” and featured a number of activities – running from January 16-20 - which while promoting the importance of reading, presented the fun and exciting side of learning.

The activities included a Career Day, a Socks Day, a T-Shirt Day and a march through the streets of Sandy Point.

The Career Day was held on Wednesday (Jan. 18) and the children set their school uniforms aside and were dressed in uniform depicting various professions. These included nurses, doctors, lawyers, police officers, fire officers and army officers.

One of the organisers of the week and teacher at the SPPS Dureen Burt-Queeley told SKNVibes that this particular activity received quite a bit of support.

“The career day was a great success. The children were well decked…in their professional outfits of their career choice. They were well supported by their parents who came in their numbers to the school. The smartly-dressed children were then accommodated by persons in the different professions as booths were set up in different classrooms and students were educated by the professionals about the various career choices. It was an awesome day for the students and teachers.”

Commenting on the T-Shirt Day which was held on Thursday, Burt-Queeley explained that, “This was another awesome input by the children and parents in presenting beautifully-coloured and designed t-shirts with lots of positive educational words. On that day also, persons and parents from within the community were invited to the school to read and donate books to the different classes.”

The week ended with a community outreach project, which saw the teachers and students marching through the streets of Sandy Point.

“The week culminated with a march and story presentation. The march, which started around 10:00a.m., was through the streets of Sandy Point sensitizing parents, children and other community members about the importance of reading and literacy. It was also quite an interactive march as the school gave food baskets to elderly and shut-in members of the community. It was well supported…The community was well-pleased with the students.”

Burt Queeley told SKNVibes that later that afternoon, a story book drama presentation was held. She concluded that “it was a successful day and week for the students, teacher and parents”.
