Team Unity launches five E-government mobile apps

    Basseterre February 15, 2017: The government of national Unity through the Ministry of Justice, Legal Affairs and Communications today launched five e-government mobile apps that will transform how it interacts with the people of the Federation of St Kitts and Nevis.  

     

    The apps, available for free download on iOS and Android platforms, include SKNIS News/Information App, SKN Shopper App, Government Directory App, Crime Prevention App and National Events App. These apps will be instrumental in enhancing access to news and information by users and providing a platform where users share feedback and information about issues affecting them.

    The SKNIS News/Information App gives users access to public service information, news and information from the Government of St. Kitts and Nevis. Users are kept updated about what is happening with each ministry and stay on top of current affairs. Any content produced by the SKNIS will be instantly available on the mobile phone via the app.

    The National Events App allows users to stay on top of their plans with this constantly updated calendar of national events. Users will be able to search for any government function and get all the details they need.

    The Crime Prevention App gives users a platform to report offences to the local police force via their mobile phones. With this app users can quickly give anonymous tips with text and pictures. Every report will be quickly reviewed by dispatchers at the nearest police station and handled accordingly.

    The Government Directory App helps users to easily get in touch with any Ministry, Department, Agency, Unit or Statutory Corporation of the Government of St. Kitts and Nevis. Users are able to gain access to these important contact details with the search-enabled directory. 

    The Consumer Affairs Division regularly compiles supermarket prices in St Kitts- Nevis to make saving easier for you. The Consumer Affairs/SKN Shopper App lets you get a broader perspective, by comparing costs across the federation and highlighting the best ones. With this application, you can search for items on your list by brand and name, as well as filter your search by area! 

    Speaking at the launch event which took place at the Ocean Terrace Inn, Deputy Prime Minister Shawn Richards commented that the launch of the new apps was part of the ongoing national lICT Agenda in which the government seeks to position St Kitts and Nevis firmly on the digital map by taking advantage of ICT innovations to improve services to the people.

    “A year ago we launched the E-government portal which has proved useful in the streamlining of government processes. As we celebrate our two years in government we can look back and say proudly that we have experienced notable changes in the efficiency with which we deliver our services. We have saved time and resources with the help of digital advancements that enable quick turnaround. These new apps are a continuation of this desire to ease communication between government and the people of St Kitts and Nevis and by extension improve services delivered.

    “We are pleased with the progress we are making regarding our ICT agenda. We continue to innovate and raise our standards as a country. We are also empowering creativity in the youth and support them as they get on board the ICT movement,” said DPM Richards.

    Also speaking at the launch was Minister of Communications who is also the Attorney General and Minister for Justice and Legal Affairs, Vincent Byron, who said that the wave of digital advancements is one which cannot be ignored and this has necessitated the shift towards more versatile platform in which to access content and interact with the people of St Kitts and Nevis.

    “We continue to make room for innovations that help us improve services. Our ICT progress as a country has been acknowledged globally. We recently were recognised as the World’s Most Improved and Most Dynamic Information Technology Development Country Index as a result of the tremendous strides made over the last year  in the  progress on the IDI (ICT Development Index) rank and the IDI value between 2015 and 2016. St.Kitts-Nevis was featuring among the most dynamic countries highlighted in the 2016 WTIS report. We are proud as a government to be able to steer our country in the right direction and bring development to the people we serve, “ said AG Byron.
     
    Among those in attendance at the launch were: Resident Ambassador of the Republic of China (Taiwan) to St.Kitts and Nevis His Excellency George Gow Wei Chiou; President of the St. Kitts-Nevis Chamber of Industry and Commerce, Mr. Jose Rosa; and General Manager of FLOW (St. Kitts and Nevis), Mr. David Lake.  

    The development of the five mobile apps was facilitated in conjunction with Open Interactive as part of a public private partnership.
