BVI Press Release

B.V.I. Thursday, June 4 – Students attending the Fifth District After-school Programme have been learning more about waste reduction through composting from the Solid Waste Department.

The department has partnered with the Department of Youth Affairs and Sports (DYAS) to reach a wide cross-section of young people and educate them on the various methods they can use to reduce the amount of waste they produce. Some of the topics discussed during the sessions included the final disposal site for household trash, composting and the 4 R’s of waste management – rethink, reduce, reuse, recycle.

Programme coordinator Ms. Lauralee Mercer commented that the children were quite enthused by the presentations and were able to answer questions particularly related to the composting session. The Solid Waste Department also visited with the Enid Scatliffe Pre-Primary School and held sessions with the students of the after school programme there.

Composting is a waste management strategy that enables natural waste such as plants, fruits and vegetables to decompose and return nutrients to the soil. The finished product can then be used as fertiliser.

The after-school programme is coordinated by the DYAS. It is designed to provide the Territory’s young people with exposure to a variety of extra-curricular activities in a safe and healthy environment at different locations throughout the BVI.

The Solid Waste Department is the government agency under the portfolio of the Ministry of Health and Social Development, which is responsible for the collection and disposal of community solid waste throughout the Territory.
