Gunmen shoot up house in Nevis

By: Sharlene Martin, SKNVibes

CHARLESTOWN, Nevis – A Charlestown mother woke from her slumber Friday night (June 5) to the sound of hooded hoodlums entering her yard and firing two bullets that caused damage to her front door.

Eulyn Rawlins of Government Road, Nevis told SKNVibes that at approximately 11:50 p.m. she was awaken from her sleep by the sound of the opening of her front gate and thought it was her son returning home. However, to her dismay, it was not him but gunmen.

“After the gate was opened I did not hear the sound of key turning in the lock to the front door and I realised something was wrong. Suddenly, I heard the sound of two gunshots. I came out of bed and peeped through my bedroom window and shouted ‘hey, hey’ and saw two men with black hoodie running from the yard,” Rawlins said.

Rawlins explained that she immediately telephoned her son and reported the matter to the police.

She added that on arrival of the police, they found one warhead in the house, which had shattered the glass on the door, and another imbedded in the wooden section of her front door.

Rawlins said that she did not know the reason(s) for the men’s attack on her residence and noted that she was not scared because “God is in control”.

Rawlins’ experience marks the fifth time in as many days that gunmen had terrified residents on St. Kitts and Nevis. Only one hour and 50 minutes before the Charlestown shooting, 20-year-old Anthony ‘Bounty’ Williams of Fort Thomas, St. Kitts was shot thrice to the body and subsequently died during surgery at the Joseph N France General Hospital.

On Monday (June 1), a shootout among three men occurred on Fiennes Avenue, McKnight in broad daylight and this was followed by two separate shootings on Wednesday night (June 3). The first had seen some eight bullets fired at the Fiennes Avenue home of Davida Phipps, causing minor damage to the front door and window, as well as to the bonnet of a car parked in the immediate vicinity.

The second occurred just over an hour later, when Gavin ‘Big Cheese’ Grant and Travis ‘Small One’ Crawford, both of Irishtown, were shot on their way home.

No one has been held concerning these incidents, but investigations are ongoing.
