Man injured in Jet Ski explosion; Fire Dept. called for assistance

By: Terresa McCall, SKNVibes.com

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – A Jet Ski explosion which took place this afternoon (Feb. 22) has reportedly left a man wounded.

SKNVibes understands that the incident took place shortly after midday at the C. A. Paul Southwell Industrial Site in an area facing the old Texaco Bulk Station.

Chief of the St. Kitts-Nevis Fire and Rescue Services Everette O’Garro informed this publication that at about 12:15 p.m., a call was received at the Basseterre Fire Station about the explosion.

He said when the unit arrived, smoke was coming from a Jet Ski which was parked at the front of the premises. The unit was successful in extinguishing the fire.

O’Garro informed that, according to the information he received, Bartholomew Davis was performing maintenance work on the apparatus when the explosion occurred.

Davis was reportedly injured and was taken to the Joseph N. France General Hospital for treatment.

Asked about the cause of the fire, the Fire Chief said the Department is uncertain but, “We suspect that there may have been a fuel leak and the fuel would have accumulated in areas around the engine and under the seat of the Jet Ski. And upon ignition of the engine, the accumulated fuel – because of its volatility – caused an explosion…”

Besides the badly-damaged Jet Ski, there was no damage done to the property.

O’Garro said further investigations are to be conducted by the Royal St. Christopher and Nevis Police Force.
