Gov’t breaks ground for Unity Housing Project

By: Jermine Abel, SKNVibes.com

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts - THE first phase of the government's housing project kicked off yesterday (Mar. 1), with a simple ground breaking ceremony held in Cayon.

Cunningham Heights was the location for the ground breaking ceremony and that area would see the government constructing some 20 to 50 homes.

The construction of those homes fits into the Team Unity Government’s 300-home initiative, to be executed over an ambitious 18 months.

According to Minister with Responsibility of Housing the Hon. Eugene Hamilton, the project is divided in three phases – each to last six months.

The first would see the construction of 120 homes.

Chairman of the Board at the National Housing Corporation (NHC) Valentine Lindsay, explained that Dieppe Bay, Wellington Road and Crab Hill are among the areas highlighted for construction of homes under the $50M Team Unity Housing Solution initiative.

He noted that his agency is committed to providing affordable homes to those who can’t afford to take a loan from a banking institution. He, however, emphasised that NHC cannot fulfil all the demands that were made for housing.

Under the government’s new project, larger, less-expensive homes would be constructed.

In addition to larger square footage, the homes would be fitted with tiles, paint and other amenities.

The 300-home-initiative was a promise made by the government while in opposition that they would roll out a plan to construct homes for persons who cannot afford to construct their own.

Just last month the government launched the project at a ceremony held at Wellington Road, Basseterre.
