Reopening of the newly designed Vitoria Road Preschool

By: EMU, Press Release

(EMU) – St. Kitts, March 8th, 2017: Rain couldn’t dampen the spirits of the teachers, staff or specially invited guests of the Early Childhood Development Unit, particularly the students of the Victoria Road Preschool as they officially opened the newly constructed school on Tuesday March 7th.

Ambassadors, Government officials, parents and well-wishers all gathered at the ribbon cutting ceremony at the school’s grounds. Amongst the guests were Mrs. Leonie James and Mrs. Vanta Walters, early pioneers of the development of modern Day Care and Pre-School. Chairperson and Education Officer, Mrs. Emileta Warner Paul, welcomed the guests and ushered the way for speakers, which included Prime Minister, Hon. Dr. Timothy Harris, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Education, Youth, Sports, and Culture, and PTA President, Dr. Vance Gilbert to give brief remarks. An overview of the project which commenced in November 2014, was given by Director of Public Works, Cromwell Williams, who thanked the Government of St. Kitts and Nevis and all stakeholders involved during the planning and construction of the Preschool.

Speaking on behalf of the staff and students of the Early Childhood Development Unit, Acting Director, Mrs. June Wallace thanked the Ministry of Education for the newly constructed preschool. She assured that by providing supportive conditions for early childhood development would be more cost effective than attempting to address the penalties later on in life. She stated, “Our Ministry of Education and more specifically our Early Childhood Unit has designed a childhood centered environment, which is reflected in the wide variety of activities in which children are engaged.” She also added, “It is the unit’s belief that the wider range of possibilities we offer children the more intense will be their motivation and the richer their experiences.”

Deputy Prime Minister Richards while expressing gratitude to all the stakeholders involved in this project urged members of the audience to keep investing in youths as they are the nation’s finest resource.  While addressing the parents, students and teachers of the newly constructed school Minister Richards, cautioned, “The facility would only last as long as the care and attention that we give to it.  Let us ensure that we use it in such a manner that other students coming to the school in the future would enjoy it just as much.”

During the ceremony, the audience was treated to musical performances by the staff and students of the school and after the ceremony, guests were taken on a tour of the facilities. The newly constructed Victoria Road Preschool consists of four classrooms, two bathrooms on the ground floor, a basement, as well as a laundry and sickbay and is completely wheelchair accessible.
