Social Studies Government Workshop

By: EMU, Press Release

(EMU)– St. Kitts, January 26th 2017: Social Studies Resource Teachers from our primary schools in St Kitts and Nevis, participated in a workshop on the topic of Government at the Curriculum Development Unit on Wednesday, January 25th, 2017. Given the vital role government plays within our society, it is not surprising that it is equally mirrored in the Curriculum for Social Studies. However, the scarcity of reliable literature and resources about the topic is troubling and often results in teachers experiencing a number of challenges when facilitating learning and teaching in this area.

The workshop was just one way in which the Coordinators for Social Studies, Mrs. Sheryl Harris and Ms. Adina Richards, intend to address the lack of adequate and reliable information.  Thus, the broad aim was to equip the Resource Teachers, so they can in turn equip teachers at their respective schools with information from reliable individuals who know the content intimately. The expected outcome is that teachers from across the Federation can more adequately cover the topic and, therefore, students can have a greater command of the content. In giving an overview of the workshop.  Mrs. Harris stated, “Government plays an integral part in the Curriculum and it is important that teachers are apprised of the information so that going forward they’ll be able to plan activities based on the knowledge they would have acquired from this workshop.”

Participants received information such as a chronological overview of the Governmental system of the Federation with significant dates and events up to the present system. In addition, they discussed the importance of government, the roles and responsibilities of different offices within the government, and how each sector of the government comes together to function productively.

The facilitators for the morning session of the workshop were Mr. Azard Gumbs and Ms. Nisharma Rattan Mack, Crown Counsels in the Ministry of Justice, Legal Affairs and Communication while the afternoon session was facilitated by Sir Probyn Inniss, Historian and former Governor of St. Kitts and Nevis from 1975 to 1981. The sessions were lively and interactive as the Resource Teachers engaged in a number of activities throughout the day.

The presenters lauded the Curriculum Development Unit for conducting the workshop as they felt it is necessary for students to know the importance of the role and function the Government and its offices play within society.

The Resource Teachers expressed gratitude for such a timely workshop and were eager to return to their schools to convey the information they garnered to the teachers who would subsequently share with students.
