BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – SEVERAL students of the Charles E Mills Secondary School were beneficiaries of a one-day workshop hosted by SKNVibes on the role of and other aspects of the media.

The Students were Chauntia Thomas, Cheyanne Govia, Shanella Samuel, Alanni Polanco and Xavier Mills.

All fourth formers, the inquisitive students were able to interact with editorial and technical staff attached to both SKNVibes and OPEN Interactive at the OPEN Creative Campus on Saturday (Apr. 1).

Senior Media Consultant at OPEN Interactive, Stanford Conway; OPEN Interactive’s Kimberly Knight and Acting Editor in Chief, Terresa McCall, were able to give the students insight into what happens in the newsroom and other areas of media in St. Kitts and Nevis and beyond.

Topics discussed, include the Role of the Media in a Democracy, Guidelines for Conducting an Interview, Basics of Writing an Article and Editing Techniques for Videos, Photos and Audio.

SKNVibes’ CEO Stachio Williams provided the students with a historical background of the two companies and future plans.

He told SKNVibes News that he was excited at the opportunity of hosting the workshop, adding the OPEN Media Service and SKNVibes have a mandate of going into the community and working with persons who are willing to elevate their skills in the areas of media, marketing and technology.

“We had a group from the Charles E. Mills Secondary School who have shown tremendous interest in a career in journalism. And with SKNVibes being one of the leading media organisation in St. Kitts and Nevis, we have undertaken to do this workshop with the group.

Williams noted that from the interest shown by the students, they appear willing to develop their skills and his company is willing to assist and mentor them.

“We feel that there is a bright future ahead for persons looking to work in the media…and we would want to continue to mentor these young people and encourage them to visit the campus and harness their skills,” he added

Denver Mike, who accompanied the group of students, expressed pleasure with the opportunity that SKNVibes/OPEN Interactive had given to these members of the Sandy Point Pride organisation to interact with media operatives.

“I want to say on behalf of Pride Sports and the Charles E Mills Secondary School and the 50th Anniversary celebration committee, thank you for opening the doors for us, for this idea and this initiative.

“I know that both companies, SKNVibes and OPEN Interactive, have been visionary companies, and I believe what we have here can be truly taken far for both the community and the wider nation.”

The students - who are part of the Mus Tri (Master-Ur-Skills Triathlon) media team - all expressed their satisfaction with the workshop and now have a different outlook at the way news is collected and compiled and the various processes which must take place before the finished product is presented.
