CIC and Min. of National Security partner on PSAT initiative

By: Terresa McCall, SKNVibes.com

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – WITH Project “Stop and Think” gaining momentum, members of the corporate community have thrown their support behind the initiative which is geared towards impressing upon young individuals the importance of considering their actions before carrying them out.

The support manifested today (Apr. 3) in the form of a donation of more than 2000 t-shirts which are to be worn by students participating in tomorrow’s Crime Reduction National March and Rally.

The handing-over ceremony took place at the compound of the Chamber of Industry and Commerce (CIC), Fortlands.

President of the CIC Jose Rosa, who listed some 10 corporate citizens who have made contributions, said it is a pleasure for the business community to be part of that initiative.

“We believe it is a great thing and we are going to support anything that will work against the crime in St. Kitts and Nevis.”

SKNVibes understands that the project was launched within the Federation since March 2016. However, Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of National Security Osmund Petty said his ministry has been a part of the initiative since the beginning of this year.

“The Chamber has come forward to partner with the Ministry of National Security and Ministry of Education…in making a statement about crime, about reducing crime, about preventing crime. Over the last three months, we teamed up with Dr. Chitan and his copywrited programme of Stop and Think…and this really will be the rallying cry of our schools, of our programme going forward… Tomorrow children will be wearing these t-shirts and we hope that this will mobilise, jumpstart many more activities of this nature in the schools.”

Dr. Neals Chitan, an International Social Skills Consultant and Crime Reduction Specialist – who introduced Project Stop and Think to the Federation, said the movement is one which is geared towards creating a “national buzz” which is expected to eventually drive crime and other displays of deviant behaviour downward.

SKNVibes understands that Dr. Chitan has been working with a number of groups of students across the Federation to this end and during tomorrow’s march/rally, certificates would be distributed.

The march/rally is expected to see the participation of in excess of 1000 students. It is slated to begin at 1:15 p.m. commencing in the vicinity of the Beach Allen Primary School.

It is to culminate at the Independence Square where speeches would be given by Prime Minister Dr. the Hon. Timothy Harris, Deputy Prime Minister and Education Minister the Hon. Shawn Richards and Dr. Chitan.
