Gov’t signs fourth major contract for commercial court

    Roadtown, Tortola - Government has signed a fourth contract worth $343,372.63 for the furnishings of the commercial court.

     

    Premier and Minister for Finance Honourable Ralph T. O’Neal, OBE signed the contract on Tuesday with Mrs. Nelda Farrington Brydon of Island Services (BVI) Ltd.

     

    Honourable O’Neal congratulated Mrs. Brydon for being awarded the contract. “I am happy to see that in business she is holding her own and was successful in getting the contract.  I wish you well.”
    The Premier said, “The signing of this contract brings us to the end of contract signings for the completion of the commercial court, a building which I am very much in favour of and promised to do everything possible to have it completed.”

     

    “The commercial court is crucial to the financial services industry in the Territory and I am glad to see the progress that has been made.  I am also pleased to see how well His Excellency the Governor and the staff of the Deputy Governor’s Office have participated in this project,” the Premier said.   

    Honourable O’Neal noted that in addition to ensuring that Government is getting value for money, BVIslanders are in the forefront, demonstrating that they too can be part and will always be a part of what is happening in the Territory. 

     

    Permanent Secretary in the Deputy Governor’s Office Ms. Julia Christopher, chaired the brief ceremony and witnessed the Premier’s signature on behalf of Government.  She expressed her thanks on behalf of the Deputy Governor’s Office to everyone involved in preparing the document and seeing the project to the final phase.

     

    Owner and Managing Director of Island Services (BVI) Ltd. Mrs. Brydon said, “Island Services is delighted to have won the bid for the furnishings for the commercial court. We look forward to working with the team to see that the project is completed in a timely fashion.”
    In addition to this Territory, the commercial court will serve the Eastern Caribbean jurisdictions including St. Vincent and the Grenadines, Grenada, Dominica, St. Lucia, Antigua and Barbuda, Montserrat, St. Kitts and Nevis and Anguilla.

     

    Government signed the first contract on November 24, 2008 for $152,414.27 with Mr. Roger Downing of the firm, Roger Downing and Partner Company Limited for the provision of consultancy and architectural services; the second contract was signed on December 9, 2008 for $188,880.00 with Mr. Ben Butler of BCQS Limited for project management services; the third contract was signed on January 26 for $2,511,198.65 with Mr. Larry Adams of Larry Adams Construction for the main works of the commercial court.

     

    The overall project cost is estimated at $3.76 million and the projected completion date is July 2009. The new facility is expected to be a world class court of which the BVI can be proud and which will attract new, high-end, commercial business to the Territory.
