(EMU) – St. Kitts, March, 31st, 2017: The Caribbean Academy of Sciences (CAS), in collaboration with the Caribbean Science Foundation, (CFS) and the Ministry of Education, hosted a workshop geared towards the empowerment of primary school science education teachers.
The two-day workshop held on the 29th and 30th March was held at the Bird Rock Beach Hotel with funding from the Embassy of the United States, Barbados, The Eastern Caribbean and the Organization of Eastern Caribbean States (OECS). The Science Technology Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) workshop focused on observation, which included the use of micro science technology kits, inquiry based teaching and learning as well as strategies to combat issues that may arise with the effective instructing of STEM.
A greater attention to the teaching of Mathematics and Science at the primary school level, and the scientific principles which needs to be communicated clearly and effectively so that students understand and apply concepts are some of the goals which CAS aims towards. CAS facilitator, Professor Winston Mellowes states, “We are interested in the sustainability of our people, the quality of life and continue to raise the level of scientific literacy in the region.”
“You have an awesome responsibility and I hope you take it seriously," stated Minister of Education, Hon. Shawn Richards, during his remarks. He urged the participants to acquire as much knowledge as possible from this workshop so that in the future they may be able to assist with the development of a new curriculum.
Minister Richards declared, “You have the responsibility of helping to revamp the curriculum of how we teach science, mathematics, and engineering within the classrooms. I am happy that we are focusing on the primary school level rather than the secondary, when many of the students would have lost interests in the STEM subjects.”
Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Education, Mr. William Hodge was in attendance to distribute micro-science kits, and participation certificates to the teachers that were in attendance. The training was provided by experienced CAS facilitators, including Dr. Winston Mellowes, Dr. Rowena Kalloo - UWI St. Augustine, Mrs. Petal Jetoo - National Science Coordinator Ministry of Education Guyana, Professor Emeritus, UWI St. Augustine and Professor Bhuall Nand Kumar. Organizers of the workshop Professor, Cardinal Warde, Executive Director and Ms. Lois Oliver, Assistant Director of the CSF, praised the Ministry of Education for its amenable efforts during the planning and implementation stages.
