BASSETERRE, ST. KITTS, April 10, 2017 (PLP PR Media Inc.) -- Political Leader of the Peoples Labour Party (PLP), Dr the Hon Timothy Harris, is thanking the Almighty God and the people who have supported him during his political career that started in 1993.

Dr Harris, who is also the Prime Minister of the Federation of St. Kitts and Nevis made the remarks on Sunday April 9 at the Liberty New Testament Church of God on lower Bamboo Street in Molineaux where he led the newly elected PLP’s National Committee and party supporters for a worship service that was presided over by Senior Pastor Augustus Shelford.

“It is always a privilege and an honour to be in the House of God,” said Prime Minister Harris. “We are committed as a people, always, to acknowledge God and to say - to God be the Glory.”

He advised that he was equally privileged and honoured to be able to serve the country from a high and difficult office, and was happy to share love and that was only possible with the wonderful support of many people and to them he said: “Thank you very much for your support and your prayers.”

The congregation was pleasantly surprised when he informed that in his office they always start the day with prayers, led by the Prime Minister’s Office’s un-official Pastor, Mr Glenville Julius who is a Lay Preacher with the Methodist Church. He introduced Mr Julius to the congregation.

“We do what we do knowing that without God much will not be accomplished,” said the Prime Minister. He added he was satisfied that they were doing the right thing in his office as “we have been able to do quite a bit in a short while and we are looking forward to doing even more with the Grace of God.”

He introduced the members of the Peoples Labour Party National Executive who were present and offered apologies on behalf of those who were not present, adding that the next time they come to the church all the members will be present.

Those introduced included the Deputy National Political Leader Senator the Hon Akilah Byron-Nisbett; the National Party Chairman, Mr Warren Thompson; the National Secretary, Ms Myrtilla Williams; and National Deputy Secretary, Mr Christophe Greaux.

Other National Executive Members - Mr Damien Weekes, Ms Sonia Henry, Mr Manasses Huggins, and Ms Tishanna Norford; and PLP Branch Party officials including Mr Cante Bowry, Mr Philmore Bedford, Mr William Phillip, and Mr Wendell Wattley and other supporters who he referred to as ‘Bold Soldiers’.

“These are all down-to-earth people, and people who understand what is happening in their communities,” said the PLP National Political Leader. “Again I want to thank them because for many of them it is their first time coming forward in an official way to serve at this level.”

Prime Minister Harris also took time to thank members of his family for the support they would have given him by standing solidly with him through valleys, downhill and uphill, noting, “I certainly would not have been able to stand. And to all those in my constituency and beyond who have adopted me as a son and a brother I say thank you from the bottom of my heart.”

And to the church he said: “I need your prayers now even more than I needed them before, and I need you to pray for our beautiful country so God may prosper it in ways that all of us can have our fair share. To God be the Glory - may You bless this church.”

Prime Harris and members of his entourage were welcomed to the church by member Mrs Inga Rogers who talked in glowing terms of the PLP’s inaugural National Convention that was held on Saturday March 25, while he was officially introduced by Mrs Jasmine Shelford, wife of Senior Pastor Shelford.

In his message Senior Pastor Augustus Shelford said that as a church they welcome people of all political persuasions, but castigated pastors who try to impose their political preferences when delivering their messages.

“Regardless of the political figure that comes here we welcome him,” said Senior Pastor Shelford. “I do not believe as a pastor it is your place to impose your political preferences … you are called to oversee at the ecclesiastical faith; pray and preaching the word that God called you to do.”

He went on and told the congregation that “as Christians we have a responsibility to pray for the leaders of our country. It is a solemn responsibility and we must not play politics with them. If you say you are a man of God, then you must do what God requires.”

During the service he called, to the front, Prime Minister Dr the Hon Timothy Harris and PLP’s Deputy National Political Leader Senator the Hon Akilah Byron-Nisbett and with the assistance of Associate Pastor Nasiph Johnson he prayed for, and blessed, the two.
