Conaree trounce Hotspurs to lift Easter Cup

By: Jermine Abel, SKNVibes.com

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts - WATCHED by a very vociferous crowd last evening (Apr. 15) at Warner Park, SOL Island Auto Conaree had proven too much for Hobson Enterprises Garden Hotspurs to handle.

The highly competitive and entertaining encounter that football fans had expected from the encounter had certainly lived up to the hype, as Conaree did enough to come away with a 5-2  extra time victory and the title of Easter Cup Champions.

The game was of high intensity from the first whistle blast with Spurs gaining most of the possession and creating a number of opportunities.

But it was an own goal that opened the score early for the Spurs after Kadeem Lewis inadvertently pushed the ball into his goal after a cross was whipped into the box.

Lewis had however redeemed himself in the second half when he netted a double to give his team the edge and a sniff at the trophy deep in the closing minutes.

However, Marlo Martin denied them that opportunity when he scored the equaliser for Spurs and pushed the game into overtime.

But that was not done without drama on the field, as indiscipline stepped into yet another football game.

Two players had squared off in the middle of the field and had to be separated; one was issued with a yellow card.

With an additional 30 minutes to the clock, Spurs defenders seemed to have weakened as three more goals were added to Conaree’s tally through a double from Javern Matthew and the other from Sylvester Caines.

The extra time also saw the flaring of tempers and more yellow cards being dished out by the referee.

Speaking to the issue of discipline on the field, General Secretary of the SKNFA Stanley Jacobs told reporters that putting the incident into perspective, one must understand that it is a final and it would be intense from both squads.

Though not giving support to the incidents, he noted: “We don’t want to take the intensity out of the game. Intensity is a part of football and I think that tonight’s game was an excellent game. I think it was a hard fought game. There were going to be fouls on  both sides and that is what football is all about.”

A jubilant coach Isiah of SOL Island Auto Conaree said that this was the only trophy missing from his cabinet and his team really wanted to leave with the cup.

“Well, tonight Conaree would have demonstrated that they wanted the Easter Cup more than their opponents. We started a bit late and a bit slow and we gave up a goal which to me was a soft call...but during the half halftime interval, I told the guys to trust themselves and trust each other.

“This was the only Cup since I joined Conaree that we never gotten, and now I can add this to it. Now I have all the cups that the SKNFA has to offer.”

Football action resumes on Tuesday (Apr. 18) with the Quarterfinals of the Football Association Cup before the league resumes on the weekend.
