BASSETERRE, ST. KITTS, April 16, 2017 (PLP PR Media Inc.) -- Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Sports and Culture the Hon Shawn Richards is congratulating Prime Minister and Constituency Representative for Constituency #7 Dr the Hon Timothy Harris for organising functions that bring people together.

The Deputy Prime Minister was one of the hundreds of persons who thronged the Black Rocks Heritage Site to take part and witness the annual Kite Flying Competition on Good Friday, where his son Jkarai Richards was one of the competitors. Other sporting disciplines which attracted people from around the island, and as far as Nevis, were also held.

This year the annual Kite Flying Competition was organised by a committee of persons drawn from the National Executive of the Peoples Labour Party (PLP) led by Mr Warren Thompson who is PLP’s National Chairman, and Ms Myrtilla Williams, PLP’s National Secretary.

“This kite flying competition is one which has been organised by the Prime Minister and the Representative for Constituency Number Seven on annual basis,” said the Hon Richards. “I consider it to be an important function in that it represents in the first instance part of our culture because traditionally we do have kite flying here in St. Kitts and Nevis during the Easter period.”

Looking at the Kite Flying event from a spiritual angle, the Minister of Culture said: “The Easter weekend is one when we celebrate the fact that Jesus Christ would have died for all of us. Rather than leaving it to persons to celebrate in a manner that may not be befitting of this part of the year, it is a function and an occasion that I think recognises the Godly aspect of us in which people can come and do something in such a manner.”

The Deputy Prime Minister who is a known supporter of the Federation’s culture and art forms observed that kite flying appears as though it has been dying to some extent and for Prime Minister Harris to hold the event on an annual basis helps to preserve and maintain that particular aspect of the country’s cultural heritage.

“Additionally, as you look around you would recognise that it is also an event which has brought out family members,” said Hon Richards. “You have children here with their parents and you have family members from throughout the different areas of the constituency. So apart from bringing family members together it is also bringing persons of all different ages together.”

In the meantime Ms Myrtilla Williams advised that the event has been running for a few years, and is held under the auspices of the area Parliamentary Representative Dr the Hon Timothy Harris, who is also the Prime Minister. She noted that attendance has been growing steadily and was happy to note that a competitor from Nevis, Ms Kennedy Stevens, had entered one of the biggest kites during this year’s competition. He also took part last year.

While the Kite Flying Competition was originally mainly a Constituency Number Seven affair, Ms Williams observed that with the Peoples Labour Party being the main sponsor of the event it is not an indication that it is restricted to party-based members.

She said that it was open for anybody as was witnessed on Good Friday where participants were drawn from all corners of the island also adding the Sylvester Masquerades that performed at Black Rocks to entertain the participants and revellers is headed by a person from Central Basseterre, and his actors are from the various areas of the country.

“We are a united people,” said Ms Williams. “I see the Deputy Prime Minister, the Hon Shawn Richards, over there and there is a youth with him too, so he is on the right track, making sure that he brings friends along and we invite everyone. It is for everyone. It is for the ministers, for pastors as well - anybody can come here and have a good time. We are all about unity, doing things together in a positive way.”
