Six-member delegation for World Relay Championships

By: Jermine Abel, SKNVibes.com

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – FOLLOWING a successful CARIFTA Games in Curacao recently, a team from St. Kitts and Nevis will be back on the track to seek more glory; this time at the World Relay Championships in the Bahamas.

A six-member contingent had winged out for Nassau to compete in the two-day meet slated for Saturday and Sunday (Apr. 22 and 23).

According to the St. Kitts-Nevis Amateur Athletics Association, the team consists of one official and five athletes.

The team is being led by Head Coach Fitzroy ‘Eric’ Francis, and Brijesh Lawrence, Lestrod Roland, Allistar Clarke, Hakeem Huggins and Dewayne Delaney are the athletes who will be competing in the Men’s 4X100m and 4X200m.

Absent from the list of representatives are a number of household names  including Antoine Adams. But according to the SKNAAA, several athletes are currently recovering from injury and other commitments.

“Previous participants of Team St. Kitts and Nevis’ successful relay quartets were forced to withdraw from the Championships due to injury and scholastic commitments.”

SKNVibes News has confirmed that Adams is one of those on the injury list.

Team selection was based on performances at the 2016 National Championships along with athlete’s fitness and competition shape for calendar year 2017.

This is not the first time that the Federation will be competing at the world event, with the best result coming in 4x200m back in 2014, when the quartet of Brijesh Lawrence, Lestrod Roland, Alistair Clarke and Antoine Adams won silver.

The BTC IAAF World Relay Championship is used as one of the qualifying events for relay teams for the World Championships and the Olympic Games.

A total of 35 countries are registered to participate at this year’s event.
