BASSETERRE, ST. KITTS, April 30, 2017 (PLP PR Media Inc.) -- Following another successful Peoples Labour Party (PLP) health walk held on Saturday April 29, the man behind the monthly walks that take walkers across Constituency Number Seven from Belle Vue to Ottley’s is satisfied that the exercise is contributing to happier and more productive citizens.

Prime Minister and Area Parliamentary Representative for Constituency Number Seven, and the National Political Leader of the Peoples Labour Party (PLP), Dr the Hon Timothy Harris, who is the brainchild of this now popular event that is attracting walkers from beyond the constituency, is saying that it has increased consciousness among the people of the Federation of the health benefits to be gained.

This last health walk was held under inclement weather that did not deter the regular walkers and new ones from all constituencies on St. Kitts, and for the very first time a walker from the island of Nevis, from assembling at the starting point in Belle Vue

“I want to say thank you again to the large number of persons who came out today,” said Prime Minister Harris at Ottley’s where the walkers were being served a nutritious breakfast. “Today we had inclement weather from very early in the morning and notwithstanding inclemency of the weather, we had such a good large enthusiastic turnout.”

Prime Minister Harris said that he hoped the project that had been initiated to increase health consciousness among the people of St. Kitts and Nevis would catch on adding that while they have chosen to hold the health walk once every month on the last Saturday of each month, that its symbolism would be given great substance by persons attempting to walk for as long as they can, and as many days of the week as possible.

“With health it is better to ensure that we remain fit for purpose than to deal with the cost of paying for and the difficulty of curative health,” observed Dr Harris who also serves as CARICOM’s lead spokesperson on human resources, health and HIV matters, as he advised that prevention is better than cure.

He said that good exercise and good dieting were critical as it would lead to people being in a position to minimise and avoid stress, and added that those can contribute to “a happier citizen and one who can contribute more to family, to community and to the country. So I commend this exercise and hope that more groups would emulate it, and it will become part of the regular routine of as many of us as possible.”

The health walk was organised by the Peoples Labour Party National Executive and on the ground to not only walk but to also ensure that the event came off flawlessly were PLP National Chairman, Mr Warren Thompson; National Secretary, Ms Myrtilla Williams; the two representatives of the women’s arm of the party, Ms Sonia Henry and Ms Tishanna Norford; and the two representatives of the youth arm or the party, Mr Manasses Huggins and Mr Damian Weekes.

When the PLP’s National Secretary Ms Myrtilla Williams announced the date of the walk, she extended an invitation to people from Nevis who would be willing to join in the walk to make arrangements to travel to St. Kitts and be with the regular and new walkers as they join Prime Minister Harris for the walk.

Ms Lucina Chapman of Clay Ghaut in Gingerland Nevis became the first, recorded, Nevisian to take part in the walk. She said that the experience was thrilling especially when she got the listening ear of the Prime Minister who warmly welcomed and thanked her for travelling from Nevis to take part in the health walk.
