Pharmcarre and Nurses Association Join Forces to Test Residents for ‘Sugar and Pressure’ This Weekend

Press Release

Basseterre, St. Kitts, May 11, 2017: Pharmcarre Pharmacy in collaboration with the St. Kitts Nurses Association are set to repeat another free Diabetes and Blood Pressure Testing event as a follow up to a successful similar activity last weekend that resulted in more than 100 persons participating.

The event will be held on Saturday May 13, at Pharmcarre’s Branch at Bird Rock, and is slated to run from 9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. However, if last Saturday’s response is any indication, chances are that the nurses will be there much longer due to the demand. In speaking to some of the individuals who stopped by to get tested, the reason for the large turnout became clearer.

Husani, a middle-aged man, was about to conduct his weekly shopping when he saw the testing taking place in the southern parking lot of the RAMS Shopping Complex. He opted to have his blood pressure checked.

“More and more you find that people are just falling ill and getting a stroke and sometimes it is your good friend or someone who you know,” he said. “We need to make a more serious effort in looking after our health, especially men.”

Sunita and her daughter also got tested for the non communicable diseases (NCDs). The mom stated that she often keeps track of her “sugar and pressure” and encouraged others to do so. When asked if she had to coax her 16-year-old daughter to test for glucose she replied: “No, no no. She told me she wanted to because she eats a lot of chocolates and she said let me check it.”

Sunita praised the organizers for taking the service to the people, admitting that most persons don’t take time to go to their doctor or a health clinic. “You just never know what may happen so I think it is a very good idea to do this,” the 40-year-old mother stated.

It’s this type of community-oriented spirit that motivated Pharmacist Isabelle Pompey-Carr and her family to open the company’s door in 2010. Pharmcarre Pharmacy quickly earned a reputation for having a wide range of pharmaceuticals and body care products at affordable prices; for offering efficient, professional and confidential service; and most importantly for being there for customers, who they describe as patients.

They take pride in educating customers about the effective use of medications; making lifestyle changes to reduce health related issues and maintain good health, and suggesting alternative solutions to problems which may be relieved by simply drinking more water or changing diet, and exercise rather than relying entirely on pharmaceuticals or supplements.

The comfort of their patients is also a priority and was one of the main reasons why a decision was made to expand the Bird Rock Branch which almost doubled in size going from 500 sq ft to over 900 sq ft.

“Our patients can now find products easier due to the enhanced display area,” Pharmacist Ivor Carr said. Ivor manages the branch and added that the variety of products have also increased, allowing customers the added convenience of shopping at one stop. Of course all of the items and more can be found at the flagship store on Fort Street in Basseterre, but the Bird Rock Branch allows an escape from the hustle and bustle of the country’s capital.

Pharmcarre and the St. Kitts Nurses Association extend an invitation to persons who may have missed the first free Diabetes and Blood Pressure testing to go out this Saturday (May 13), to take advantage of this community service. Free samples of Honsei Ginger Honey Tea will be available for everyone.
