BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – THE Caribbean College of Surgeons (CCS) wrapped up its annual conference in St. Kitts on Sunday (June 14), with many delegates deeming it the best incarnation so far.

Approximately 80 surgeons from across the Caribbean, North America and the UK attended the conference, which was held from Friday to Sunday (June 12-14) at the St. Kitts Marriott Resort and Royal Beach Casino. Scientific papers on pressing surgical issues facing the region were presented and discussed during the three-day event.

According to Dr. Cameron Wilkinson, event lead-organiser as well as the current CCS Secretary, the conference was a resounding success. He noted that it was an opinion shared not only by him, but also by the majority of participants.

“I think this year’s conference, which was our seventh meeting, was very successful. It was the biggest so far in terms of turnout, and the best so far in terms of quality and the standard of papers presented,” said Wilkinson.

Founding CCS President Errol Walrond revealed to SKNVibes that the College was established out of the need for surgeons within the region to be modern and up-to-date. He reasoned that through the sharing of knowledge and best practices, doctors would be well-placed to provide an impeccable quality of service.

Prime Minister Dr. the Hon. Denzil Douglas, who was a practicing medical doctor before assuming his current position, officially declared the conference open on Friday and had words of praise and motivation for the delegates.

“That you all are gathered here sends a message that the region will be second to none in delivering quality healthcare. Reaching the highest pinnacle in surgical practice is of great importance, and this conference will only add to your efforts to place the region on the cutting edge of surgical techniques. I commend you for your dedication towards excellence, and I encourage you to sustain your purpose for the benefits of the people of the region.”

Also during the conference, Sir Cuthbert Sebastian, Governor-General of St. Kitts and Nevis, was honoured and inducted as a fellow of the College.
