BASSETERRE, St. Kitts - A number of soca sensations are getting ready to ‘blaze up’ the United States Capital for a concert dubbed “Soca in Motion”, where Trinidadian soca legend Bunji Garlin would headline the June 27 event.
The event is scheduled for Washington at the newly-renovated DC Star in celebration of Garlin’s birthday and also in celebration of the annual Caribbean Culture Island Style Carnival.
According to riddimjamaica.net, the event will boast some of Trinidad and Tobago's 2009 Carnival quadruple crown-winners in Fayann Lyons, Destra Garcia, Benjai, Patch, Trini Jacobs, and Hunter, alongside Garlin and his famed Asylum Band. Rounding out the power-packed line-up of soca royalty will be the Caribbean’s music icon, Beenie Man, in his capacity as the ‘King of the Dancehall’, who will be officiating the festivities.
Garlin, who was born Ian Alvarez, will be celebrating his 30th birthday on July 14. In December 2006 he married fellow soca artiste Fay-Ann Lyons, from which union produced a baby girl last February.
The soca ‘Fire Man’, as he is known, has won Trinidad’s Soca Monarch title several times and is known for hits such as ‘Blaze the Fire’, ‘Worrior Cry’ and ‘Fiery’ while earlier in this year he placed second in the International Soca Monarch with ‘Clear De Road’.
The ‘Down in the Ghetto’ singer was quoted as saying, “DC Carnival is the perfect place to celebrate my birthday. The spirit of carnival is the spirit of the Caribbean - lively, colourful, celebratory and welcoming. That is what my music is about. That is what soca music is about.”
