ROAD TOWN, Tortola – THE Miss British Virgin Islands (BVI) Pageant Committee has recently announced the names of the six contestants who will be competing for the prestigious title in this year’s competition.

The six contestants captivated the large gathering of patrons when they were introduced to the public at Charlie’s Courtyard. The competing beauties are 21-year-old Josefina Nunez, Mauritza Benjamin (24), Enya Douglas (19), Jasmine Perez (20), Jenifer France (27), and 20-year-old Laurel Harrigan.

They were said to enchant the crowd with their personal elegance and style, as they introduced themselves and invited the audience to the Miss BVI Pageant.

According to a press release from the Pageant Committee, Ministers of Government Vincent Scatliffe and Elvis Harrigan were in attendance and they equally expressed their excitement about the event.

Harrigan stated that he was impressed with the high quality of the event. He also promised his full support to the Committee and commended its members for their hard work, noting they have raised the standards of this year’s pageant.

A new committee was recently put in place and this year the aim is to award the winner with a car, official wardrobe, a Government Scholarship, cellular phone, a trip to Berlin with the BVI Tourist Board, a trip to the Miss Universe Pageant in 2010 and many other exciting gifts and prizes.

In commemoration of the 1834 Emancipation Act, which marks the abolition of slavery in the British Virgin Islands, an annual August Festival is held and it attracts visitors from around the world.

The Miss British Virgin Islands Pageant, which is one of the many events held during the two-week Festival, specifically benefits young women by providing them an opportunity to achieve their educational aspirations through a scholarship for tertiary education, and enhancing their personal and professional growth while gaining valuable experience that will benefit them throughout their lives.
