Irie Fields, Kittitian Hill, “The World’s first edible golf course”

By: Kittitian Hill, Press Release

“I’rie” Rastafarian for; “the way you feel when you have no worries, sometimes induced by smoking Ganja”

St Kitts West Indies, May 25, 2017 -- Kittitian Hill is pleased to announce the opening of all eighteen holes of golf at Irie Fields, a championship, par 71 course. Set 500 ft. above the Caribbean sea on the foothills of Mt. Liamuiga, Irie Fields boasts spectacular views of the neighbouring islands: St. Barts, St. Eustatius, Saba, and St. Martin.

Designed by Welsh pro, Ian Woosnam and European Golf Design, Irie Fields embraces it’s natural surroundings and represents the future evolution of golf through a dedication to sustainability in keeping with the philosophy of Kittitian Hill. The opening of all 18 holes at Irie Fields is certainly set to transform and elevate the game of golf in the Caribbean with its unique story and experience.

Irie Fields, Kittitian Hill is the first golf course to achieve the prestigious, LEGACY Certification from Golf Environment International (GEO) making it one of the most sustainable golf courses in the world. The fruit orchards and vegetable farms including Mangos, Avocados, Bananas, Guavas, Pineapples and Passion fruit to name a few, are being planted. So shortly fruit sampling will become a part of the golfing experience and local caddies will not only share tips with golfers, but also identify fruits ready for eating, making it truly “the World’s first edible golf course”.

To receive the prestigious GEO Legacy certification, founder Val Kempadoo placed sustainability at the very heart of Irie Fields – from selecting a suitable site and planting the right grass, to sourcing more than 97 percent of  the construction materials locally.  Irie Fields maximizes the land’s farming opportunities by transforming a normally 200-acre sterile, mono-culture, into a productive ecosystem by holistically integrating farms into the golf course.

In keeping with the commitment of being 100% organic, no chemicals, synthetic pesticides or fertilizers were used in the construction and maintenance of Irie Fields.  Irie Fields’ design and purpose is greater than being “green” – the forward-thinking golf course is aligned with Kittitian Hill’s commitment to cultural, economic, social and ecological wellbeing of its local community and has planted the roots for the future of golf.

Kittitian Hill looks forward to hosting local and international golfers alike at our award-winning course, as well as professional tournaments in the future.

“Come and play away your worries”
