By: EMU, Press Release

(EMU) – St. Kitts, May, 29th, 2017: The partnership between Christophe Habour, Hands Across the Sea and Ministry of Education continues to flourish as teachers of the Sandy Point Primary School receive training in literacy techniques.

The workshop aimed at, ‘Creating an Interactive Learning Environment that Will Improve Literacy’, was facilitated at the school by Library and Media Specialist, Ms. Jennifer Thrift and author Ms. Heidi Fagerberg. Ms. Thrift indicated the main goal of this workshop is to provide different interactive environments to improve literacy in the classroom, and also to integrate the technology that has been provided by the Ministry of Education. She states, “I firmly believe that literacy is the key to education, creating the environment in the classroom to provide life-long readers at this school.”

The Christophe Harbour Foundation and Hands Across the Sea collaboration intends to improve literacy in both St. Kitts and Nevis by expanding the quality of assistance provided by the existing school libraries. The partnership has given Christophe Harbour an arm to reach further into the community and to have a direct impact where it matters most, the youths.

“Creating content that works well for the schools’ is very important to me,” stated author, Heidi Fagerberg, who has been in deliberations with the Ministry of Education with the aim of successfully implementing her most recent work a children’s book which is set in St. Kitts, entitled ‘The Crumb Bunch,’, to be incorporated into the curriculum. She stated, “My previous four books are currently being used in the Early Learners Programme (ELP), and I have worked with the coordinators, and learned about their initiatives so that I can continue to write books that are appropriate to St. Kitts and Nevis.”

So far the organization has helped several primary schools around the federation and donated countless library resources. Hands Across the Sea is currently the most effective child literacy organization, serving the Eastern Caribbean countries of Antigua, Dominica, St. Kits and Nevis, St. Lucia, St. Vincent & the Grenadines and Grenada.
