Education PS Hodge says ministry is targeting the cream of the crop for pre service training

By: EMU, Press Release

(EMU) – St. Kitts, May, 30th, 2017: Permanent Secretary in The Ministry of Education, Mr. William V. Hodge, says July 9th to 21st is a period when the Ministry will be focussing on identifying top candidates who will join the teaching fraternity in September 2017 following this period of pre-service training for prospective teachers.

The permanent secretary explained that the period of training has increased in comparison to recent years due to the priority that is being placed on identifying candidates that are well suited to carry out the teaching assignment.

He said that not only must candidates have the basic qualifications which include five Caribbean Secondary Education Certificate (CSEC) subjects in the case of pre-school to Primary level teachers and five CSEC subjects including English, Math, Social Science, and Science, but they must also be fully dedicated to the two week training period.

“I want to say to those young persons applying to become teachers that if you have a commitment to Education and want to become a teacher then you have to devote the time to attend pre-service training. This is the only way that you can possibly be hired if you attend the induction course for the full duration,” Mr. Hodge stated.

Participants will also be required to sit two tests in Language and Basic Mathematics.

As far as facilitators the ministry is looking to utilize principals and deputy principals; senior teachers; Ministry officials such as Education officers and staff from the central office.

The permanent secretary (PS) explained that the objective is to utilize individuals who are aware of what is happening in the schools and who can impart that information to the new recruits as well as pass on skills and expertise.

Mr. Hodge further stated that in order to make an informed decision as far as recruiting the “Cream of the Crop” coming into education, that he would take a very up close and intimate involvement in the training.

The PS added “I want to make my own contribution to the training and I plan to teach the prospective teachers to teach poetry at the primary school level. It gives me a chance to actually meet prospective teachers; those coming to work in the system. I am taking a very keen interest, as well as a very personal and intimate involvement in this course.”

Topics will include Classroom Management; pedagogical skills; The Teaching of Science, Math and Language and Discipline among others.

The event will take place at the Burdon Street Campus of the Clarence Fitzroy Bryant College and the Deadline for applications is Friday June 9th, 2017.
