BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – IN continuation of its charity programme, the Christophe Harbour Foundation yesterday (May 29) held a one-day pilot workshop in the areas of Literacy and Technology at the Sandy Point Primary School.

The training session, which was a collaborative among the Ministry of Education, Hands Across the Sea and the Foundation, was organised to provide teachers of that institution the opportunity to experience different interactive environments and to improve classroom literacy.

According to the Foundation’s member, Jennifer Thrift, they would know if the project was a success, based on the outcome, and if similar exercises should be held at other educational institutions in St. Kitts and Nevis.

Twenty-five teachers had participated and they were taught how to create a life-long reader and reading within the classroom, as well as how to provide that enabling environment at the Sandy Point Primary.

SKNVibes asked Thrift if she was aware of the literacy rate in the Federation, to which she declared is very low.

“The research that we have done, we have noticed that the literacy rate is very low and so we are really trying to improve the literacy by creating that improved environment.”

She indicated that “to be good role models for their children” is the main idea she would have liked the teachers to take away from the workshop.

“And to love literacy and to create life-long readers,” she added.

The programme’s success would not be measured immediate, but over the next several months, Thrift revealed, noting that the possibility exist that they would also be considering moving the programme to the high schools.

The Christophe Harbour Foundation has been providing assistance and support to the Ministry of Education in various schools in the area of literacy and technology.
