Press Release

BASSETERRE ST. KITTS (June 16, 2006) -- At a ceremony held to mark the opening of a constituency office in Conaree Monday afternoon, area parliamentary representative and minister of Housing, Agriculture and Fisheries, Hon Cedric Liburd, promised more access to the Conaree multipurpose centre by the area residents.

“I have heard your concerns for more access to and responsibility for this centre,” said Minister Liburd. “I concur with you that the people of Conaree should be able to possess more ownership in a centre built for you. I have already begun meetings with the Ministry of Community Development to create the right structure to create the post of Centre Warden to be filled by one of the competent and responsible residents of Conaree.”

Giving an account of some of the achievements the residents of Conaree have derived from his stewardship since he was elected in 1995, Liburd outlined that the centre, which is now a centre of excellence in the YES Programme, was one of them. He also alluded to the construction of a 75,000 gallon water reservoir, a road network, two housing projects with 27 homes and land distribution.

The opening of the office was meant to enhance the strong relationship St. Kitts-Nevis Labour Party has shared with the people of Conaree, “from the days when Conaree voted its conscience and ushered in the change that brought in a government that works on behalf of all people, to the present when we know that the Labour Government is working and delivering good things for all the people of this fair land.”

The colourful ceremony to open the office on Main Street, was attended by scores of local residents, who were joined by the Deputy Prime Minister, Hon Sam Condor, who gave the feature address, Minister of Health, Hon Rupert Herbert, Minister of Information and Technology, Hon Nigel Carty and Labour Party candidates, Dr Norgen Wilson of Constituency Five (Sandy Point) and Glenn Phillip of Constituency Four (Old Road).

Condor, who is also the deputy party leader, spoke highly of Cedric Liburd stating that he (Liburd) first attempted elective politics as a Labour Party candidate in 1989 where his request to the constituents was that they give him one term and he would earn the rest. This came into being in 1995 when he was elected to parliament and has retained the seat since.

The Deputy Prime Minister further stated that Cedric Liburd, who will be defending his seat on the St. Kitts-Nevis Labour Party ticket, was the most hard working minister and politician in St. Kitts and Nevis and requested the people of Conaree to lend their support to him by re-electing him.

Chairing the ceremony was Desmond Hobson, while Rev Fr Isaiah Phillip offered the opening prayer and Gus Williams gave the vote of thanks. Prominent community personality, Dorothy Browne cut the ribbon to declare the St. Kitts-Nevis Labour Party constituency office open, the first by a political party in Conaree.

After the end of the ceremony residents enjoyed a game of dominos, which Minister Liburd promised to revive in Conaree. A resident who played against the minister said that they used to have regular competitions in Conaree but the game had become dormant. He hailed Minister Liburd’s efforts to revive it among the residents of Conaree.

In the meantime, Minister Liburd hailed the recent success by Conaree athletes especially the football team. “I want to make mention of and congratulate the team who in the last two months won the Chippie five-aside football competition,” he said as he delivered the opening remarks. “The success of these young men came as a direct result of the love and support of all the Conaree people and the investment in the state of the art sporting complex.

“With the opening of this campaign office I invite the young men and women of Conaree to come and dialogue with us on proposals to fence the football field and provide seating for spectators. Let us discuss the vision of Conaree becoming a home to the SKNFA Super League in the future.”
