Samuels guides Windies to T20 Series sweep

By: Staff Reporter, SKNVibes.com

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts - A display of clean ball-striking by middle order batsman Marlon Samuel ensured that the West Indies swept the visiting Afghanistan team in their three-match T20 Series at Warner Park last evening (Jun. 5).

Winning the toss, the Afghans opted to take first strike on a good batting surface and they wasted little time in hammering the West Indies bowlers.

Jerome Taylor, who opened the bowlin, was taken for six runs off his first over which included a boundary.

Noor Ali Zadran wasted little time in clubbing a poor bowling display in Taylor’s second, which went for 13 runs.

    But Kesrick Williams’ 3 for 34, Samuel Badree’s 1 for 26 and Taylor’s 1 for 33 restricted Afghanistan to 146 for 6 off their allotted 20 overs.

With the visitors looking to stave off a whitewash, their batsmen showed more application and better batting IQ in their time at the crease compared when with the two previous games.

Mohammed Nabi top scored with 38 off 30 balls that included two sixes and a similar amount of fours, while Zadran chipped in with a quick fire 35 from 19 deliveries.

In reply, Samuels, in his highest T20 score, hammered his way to 89 off 66 balls, reaching the boundary on nine occasions and thrice crossing the ropes to give West Indies a seven-wicket victory to the delight of home supporters.

Entering the crease with the score on 0 for 1, Samuels crafted out a 61-run partnership with Evin Lewis before the latter departed.

The right-handed batsman then added 21runs with Lendl Simmons, who depart for 16 trying to attack Rashid Khan but miscued it to long-off.

Jason Mohamed then joined Samuels and together they saw the Windies home with four balls remaining.

Teams will now travel to St. Lucia for the limited overs series, which will be played at the Darren Sammy National Stadium, beginning on Friday (Jun. 9).
