Local Publishing Company, CaribbeanReads Book Donation to the Sandy Point Primary

By: EMU, Press Release

(EMU) – St. Kitts, June 7th, 2017 -- Students of the Sandy Point Primary School were the delightful recipients of a set of books from St. Kitts-Nevis based publishing company, CaribbeanReads Publishing.

The books are part of a program called, ‘Plant a Seed to Read’ the pilot program delivers culturally relevant books to primary schools in the Federation to promote literacy. The books for the school were provided as a result of funding from the Sandy Point Benevolent Society.

This is the second donation that CaribbeanReads made to the youths of the Federation. A previous donation was made last year to the Beach Allen Primary School with the support of the Advancement for Children Foundation (ACF) who funded the books, Janice Brookes, Managing Director of Global Shipping and Brokerage Services secured funds from Neutralogistics and Global Shipping to cover the cost associated with shipping the books.

Mrs. Carol Ottley-Mitchell, author and founder of CaribbeanReads Publishing commented "The reaction of the children today when they heard the name of one of the books, 'Adventure at Brimstone Hill' was priceless. They were obviously excited and proud to hear there was a book based on a place that they knew well. Having books that children can relate to on a personal level is key to advancing literacy. We continue to seek funding or other support for the Plant a Seed to Read program so that we can one day deliver books to all the schools in the Federation on an ongoing basis.

“We are working with teachers and the Curriculum Development Unit to create lesson plans and resources for teachers and librarians to use with children’s books based in St. Kitts.” stated co-ordinator for ‘Plant a Seed to Read’, Heidi Fagerberg.

Some of the books that were donated includes, “Adventure at Brimestone Hill” and ‘Chee Chee in Paradise, by Carol Ottley-Mitchell and ‘Wilbur the Beach Pig Remember When’, by Heidi Fagerberg.  The students of the school will be able to take home the donated books.
