2017 Music Festival a tremendous success...says Powell

By: Jermine Abel, SKNVibes.com

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – NOW that the promotion and hype for the 2017 St. Kitts Music Festival are over, Ambassador Jonel Powell was pleased to announce that the event was a huge success.

Powell, who is the Chairman of the Artistes Selection Committee, indicated that this year’s festival “has been a tremendous success”, when asked by SKNVibes at one of the press conferences how he rated the event.

Powell pointed to the Thursday and Friday nights’ turnout, describing the crowds as being “spectacular”.

He took into consideration the fact that many patrons had turned up on the first evening for the Band Clash and waited until the wee hours of Friday morning to see the performers.

“It has been a tremendous success; it is not just about the crowds. This year we stepped out of the box a bit in terms of the types of artistes that we brought in. The Goo Goo Dolls - it was a bit of a wild card and it paid off last night,” he said.

The responses that act received from the crowd and the new demographics that came out had tipped the scale to a success, according to Powell.

Over the years many people have complained that the Festival had failed to grow in terms of its popularity. However, the 2017 edition had seen the Committee making a number of changes to give patrons - both locally and overseas - the opportunity to know more about the Festival very early.

The Committee had very early locked in artistes and launched the Festival at its earliest (February), as the members made public some of the changes they had for the 2017 edition, including the Band Clash.

Head of the Marketing Committee, Val Henry noted that the success of the event was not only reflected in gate receipts.

“We have to turn back to the purpose of the Music Festival. In June 1995, hotels were low in occupancy; hotels had to send home staff in what they called the ‘low season’. Hotels looking to send home staff meant that the restaurants would have to look other business and they had to send home staff. Try getting a room in this hotel today, try getting a room in a hotel down the road today, try getting a rental car to rent today...yes, in terms of the returns back to the Government in terms of taxes, that is also a great revenue.”

Questioned about the black-marketing of tickets, Ambassador Powell noted that they did not have too much of a problem in that area.

“Our fantastic team of volunteers are on the ball and they know what to look for and they are doing a spectacular job, and we are not worrying too much about that.”

This year, over 30 performers had gracing the stage of the three-night extravaganza and many patrons said that are looking forward to the 2018 edition.
