Public Works in consultation on coastal erosion

By: Staff Reporter, SKNVibes.com

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts - WITH the rapid erosion of sections of the coastline in St. Kitts, the Government, through the Public Works Department, is currently in consultation to prevent further damage.

According to the Minister of Public Infrastructure, the Hon. Ian Liburd, there is currently a capital project that has already been approved by the Government in this year’s budget.

It is called the Coastal Revetment Project, which covers Irish Town and Fortlands.

The two areas have seen mass erosion over the past several months with water from the Caribbean Sea making its way onto the roads, while the sand has quickly washed away.

Liburd disclosed that the fund currently available is to undertake the consultancy aspect of the project.

Coming off that consultancy, the Minister intimated that a final decision would be made on the way forward on a complete project that would be undertaken.

“It is partly being funded by government and some development aid would be coming from the CDB. We already sent the profile to the CDB and we are waiting for them to appoint the relevant officials.”
