Chamber and PM Harris shared concerns and solutions on crime

By: Chamber of Industry and Commerce, Press Release

June 28th, 2017 -- On Sunday 25 June 2017, representatives of the St. Kitts and Nevis Chamber of Industry and Commerce had an emergency meeting with Prime Minister, the Honorable Timothy Harris, the Commissioner of Police Ian Queeley and other Government representatives to discuss the crime wave that threatens the overall stability of the Federation.

During a frank and direct discussion, the Chamber team, led by President Jose A. Rosa, communicated to the Prime Minister and his team, the growing anxieties of the private sector over crime and violence that continue unchecked and unabated, despite attempts to control this social problem. The Chamber representatives further indicated that the level of violent crime and the threat it causes to life and personal safety of business owners and their employees is seriously affecting business confidence.

The Prime Minister assured the Chamber of the commitment of the Government to use all the necessary resources to interrupt this destructive wave including, but not limited to the addition of personnel and equipment to improve the expertise at all levels of the National Security Forces.

The Chamber welcomed the candid discussion and assurances of the Prime Minister and looks forward to implementation and early effectiveness of Government’s proposed initiative.

The Chamber calls on the business community and residents in general to take severely enhanced security measures of every type within the law (including the installation of security cameras) and to exercise constant vigilance to protect life and property. The Chamber also calls for increased co-operation between the community in general and the police including the provision of relevant information that may assist in the deterrence and resolution of crime and violence.
