Royal Utilities donates to cancer patient and fire victims

By: Staff Reporter, SKNVibes.com

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – ROYAL UTILITIES, a member of the tri-party Royal Group of Companies, continues to give back to society as the business establishment recently donated an undisclosed sum of money to the Mickey’s HOPE Foundation.

The donation, in the form of a cheque comprised of US dollars, was presented to Mickey Weintraub of the Mickey’s Helping Our People Everyday (HOPE) during a simple but very significant ceremony in the Frigate Bay office of the Royal Utilities by the entity’s General Manager, Gerry Mosie.

The donation was initiated following a discussion between Weintraub and Mosie, during which the latter was updated on the charitable work in which HOPE Foundation is involved.

It was disclosed that the Foundation, which has a primary focus on assisting destitute persons, would use the donation to assist three fire victims and two cancer patients.

According to Moise, Mickey would drive throughout the Federation to assist people in need by providing them with food and other supplies.

“When I spoke to Mickey a few weeks ago, he mentioned that he had two cancer victims – one a child and the other a mother – so we decided to go ahead with the donation from Royal Utilities to Micky’s HOPE Foundation. We decided to step it up so that he can help these persons who are in need.

“There are good, decent people who are very destitute right now. And when a fire burns down your home and every single thing that you own, that is devastating to anybody. Those people would need help.”

Mickey told SKNVibes that the Foundation would be assisting a child on Nevis who is struggling with cancer, a mother who is also battling that ailment and several elderly persons whose homes were damaged by fire.

He also said that monies would not be given to the fire victims, but his Foundation would purchase items and make donations.

He assured that only necessities would be purchased for those victims.

Speaking about the cancer victims, Mickey said there is a four-year-old patient in Nevis who has a port inserted in his body so as to allow the Chemotherapy drug to be administered into his system.

“The chemo drug is not available on St. Kitts, and I have been able to source it from overseas and have it brought into St. Kitts,” he said.

He continued: “The breast cancer patient, in order to diagnose whether or not she had the cancer, needed a whole-body scan which cannot be obtained here. I was able to arrange at a steeply discounted price for her to get the whole-body PET scan performed in Bengaluru, India at 10% of the cost that it would be in Trinidad.”

Mickey pointed out that following that scan, it was revealed that she does have the ailment and she is now seeking treatment.

But according to the Foundation’s head, despite there being an Oncology Unit in the Federation, the Chemotherapy drug that patients need has to be sourced from overseas.

He also informed that there have been three fires in recent weeks that resulted in people being affected and the HOPE Foundation intends to assist the victims.

Mickey is calling on the business community to not only support his Foundation but also other organisations that assist those who are in need.
